Nanjing Road is Shanghai's main shopping street, famously named one of the World's Seven Great Roads in the 1930s and now making a rapid comeback after decades of Maoist austerity. You made an understandable mistake if you thought Nanjing Road was in Nanjing. Actually, it is the most prosperous commercial street in Shanghai, and also known as the Shanghai's Champs Elysees. It is China's premier shopping street, 3.4-mile-long Nanjing Road, starts at the Bund in the east and ends in the west at the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan'an West Street. Today Nanjing Road is a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world.

Process of the development
After the Opium War (1839-1842), Shanghai became a treaty port. Nanjing Road was first the British Concession, then the International Settlement. Importing large quantities of foreign goods, Nanjing Road became the earliest significant shopping street in Shanghai. A lot of merchants established hundreds of stores on both sides of the road gradually because of the good geomancy there. Some of them gained nationwide fame shortly after. The four famous global department stores at that time were "Yongan", "Xianshi", "Xinxin" and "Daxin",among which "Daxin"become the largest. By the end of the 1920s, Nanjing Road was flourishing and blazing with colorful neon lights. After 1949, more and more stores rose up on both sides of Nanjing Road. Great prosperity came to many of the well established stored.Shanghai is an international metropolis and Nanjing Road is like a mirror reflecting the prosperity and flourishing of modern Shanghai. If there were a Triumphal Arch at one end of the street, people who have not been there before might believe they were really on Champs Elysees of Paris, France.
Today over 600 businesses on Nanjing road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions. KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other world-famous food vendors line both sides of the street. Upscale stores include Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill.

The project will be completed by 2010. The Nanjing Road will be built into a leading world-class commercial destination, like the Champs Elysees in Paris and Fifth Avenue in New York. Mckinsey }Co, one of the worlds largest consulting companies, is participating in the current project to design the streets new image. The company has spent three months investigating such world-famous streets, including Londons Oxford Street ص and Tokyos Ginze . Based on the success of those streets and an in-depth study on the strengths and insufficiencies of Nanjing Road, Mckinsey presented a plan to divide the street into three sections. The first section, from the Bund to Henan Zhouglu, will be known as Heritage Shanghai The section is mainly for sightseeing and quality goods shopping. The second section, from Henan Zhonglu to Xizang Zhonglu, will be called as Cosmopolitan ShanghaiΡ . The section will house ChinaΡs largest street mall. The third section, running from Xizang Zhouglu to Chengdu Beilu, will be known as A Taste of Tomorrow. The section will be designed mainly for recreation and entertainment. Of the 18 billion yuan (US $ 2.17 billion) to be invested, only a small section of the infrastructure is Nanjing Road wonΡt be turned into an expensive consumption district like Ginza in Tokyo.
